<p>The Shaluli Mountains, known in Tibetan as Powor Gang, are a large mountain range in western China between the Upper Yangtze  and Yalong Rivers. It is one of the core ranges of the Hengduan group of mountains. The Shaluli Mountains stretch over 500km from Dege County, Sichuan in the north to Shangri-La County, Yunnan in the south. The highest peak of the range is Ge&#39;nyen Massif at 6,204 m above sea level. Other subranges in the Shaluli Mountains include the Chola Mountains to the north, the Zhaga Mountains to the east, the Yading massif in the south, and Haba Snow Mountain at the southern edge of the range.</p><br>
<p>The Shaluli Mountains were historically part of the Kham region of Tibet and are now mostly administered as part of Garze Prefecture in modern-day Sichuan Province. Litang is the major population centre in this mountain region.</p><br>

<p>The Sasser Farm in Grady County, Georgia, near Cairo, Georgia, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It included nine contributing buildings.</p><br>
<p>According to its NRHP nomination, it was deemed significant in part as "a good example of the type of small, family-owned farmstead that once abounded in southwest Georgia. From the simple log house and later the "new" house, a farm was maintained where cotton, corn, and livestock were raised. Several county innovations are said to have occurred here including the first dipping vats for cattle, one of the first large, raised concrete silos, and construction of an ice house before ice came into general use. The Sasser Farm truly represents the American frontier dream."</p><br>
<p>The "new" house was built in 1887. It is a one-story double pen, central hall plan house with a metal roof. An overhanging portion of the roof is supported by four columns.</p><br>
<p>The old was a log house built in c.1839.</p><br>
<p>Besides the houses buildings on the site include a wash house, a smokehouse, a cold storage (ice) building, a garage, a corn crib, a mule barn, and a silo.</p><br>
<p>The Quitman County Courthouse and Old Jail in Georgetown, Georgia was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.</p><br>
<p>The listing includes the Old Quitman County Jail which was built in 1891 and was separately listed on the National Register in 1981.</p><br>
<p>The old jail is a two-story brick structure that served until c.1965. It was renovated in 1994. It replaced the original wooden jail, built in 1859, that first served Quitman County, founded in 1858. The original jail was a wooden structure built in 1859. It was replaced in 1891 with the current brick structure.</p><br>
<p>The courthouse is a one-story brick courthouse built in 1939 by the Public Works Administration using federal relief funds. It was designed by Columbus, Georgia architect T. Firth Lockwood, Jr. (1894-1963) in Stripped Classical style.</p><br>
<p>The Town Hall and District School No. 6 are a pair of historic government buildings at 12 South Street in Morris, Connecticut. The school, built about 1772, and the town hall, built 1861, are well-preserved examples of vernacular civic architecture. They presently house the local historical society museum, and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former town hall and district school stand in the village center of Morris, on the west side of South Street (Connecticut Route 61) opposite the village fire station. The town hall is a single-story wood frame structure with a gabled roof, clapboarded exterior, and stone foundation. A square belfry with pilastered corners, louvered openings, and pyramidal roof graces the roof ridge. The main facade has a pair of symmetrically placed entrances, each topped by a simple cornice. The school building is smaller, with a similarly clapboarded and gable-roofed exterior. It has original windows and plaster walls, but other interior features are replacements.</p><br>
<p>The school building is the older of the two, built about 1772 and originally located some 3.5 mi away, near King&#39;s Gristmill. It was moved a short distance in 1910 to make way for a reservoir, and continued use as a school until 1915. It was moved several times before landing here in 1981 for restoration. The town hall was built in 1861, and served the town until 1932, when the Morris Community Building, the present town hall, was built.</p><br>
<p>Megami Lake is a lake located in Tateshina, Nagano Prefecture. An artificial lake constructed for agricultural purposes, it is also known as Akanuma Reservoir. A development to make it into a resort site is also underway. It is in Yatsugatake-Chūshin Kōgen Quasi-National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The lake is positioned about four kilometres to the northwest of Mount Tateshina. The lake&#39;s surface is 1540 metres above sea level, has a surface area of 0.12 square kilometres, a circumference of 1.5 kilometres and an average depth of 4 metres.</p><br>
<p>In 1966, the warm water reservoir was completed on the site of a wetland called Akanuma. It was constructed as part of a plan to improve an agricultural irrigation channel from the Edo period. Holding 320, 000 cubic metres, it provides water to 1537.3 hectares of farmland downstream. As Mount Tateshina is sometimes known as Menokami-yama (Goddess mountain), the lake was named Megami-ko (Goddess lake) after it.</p><br>
<p>The Venus Line road opened in 1967 and connected the lake to Lake Shirakaba, which was a more established tourist destination. Boats can be seen on the lake in summer, and in August the Shirakaba Kōgen Firework Display is held. The red leaves of autumn have also been praised for their beauty. In winter, the frozen lake surface is turned into a race track, which is used to hold courses in road safety as well as to test drive cars in development.</p><br>
<p>With the help of English literature scholar Kimie Imura, the Lake Megami Fairy Festival has been held since 2010. The area&#39;s abundant nature is said to be popular with the fairies spoken of in European folklore, and the event is held to coincide with periods when fairies are supposedly close to the human world (in the fiscal year of 2011, it was held in May, June, October and February). It was conceived as a plan to revitalise the area, and by making fairies the theme it has a high degree of originality and newsworthiness. As well as this, the event takes place between the summer and winter tourist seasons, with an aim to increase visitor numbers in that period.</p><br>
<h2>Shiozawa-segi</h2><br>
<p>Shiozawa-segi (塩沢堰) is an irrigation channel that flows through Tateshina. Along with Uyama-segi and Yaebara-segi, it is considered one of the three major irrigation channels of Tateshina. It is also registered on the Sosui Hyakusen, a list of the best one hundred in Japan.</p><br>
<p>It was originally built by Rokugawa Chōsaburō, work began in 1644 and finished in 1646. Its sources are located in the mountains, at Benzaiten (1680 metres above sea level) and Mizuide (1660 metres above sea level) amongst others. Before this time the feudal domain had a kokudaka of a little over fifty koku, but after the completion of Shiozawa-segi this increased rapidly. In 1672 it had reached as much as 662 koku. Rokugawa Chōsaburō&#39;s name, along with his great power, was passed down for many generations. The family was responsible for maintaining and managing the irrigation channel, controlling the amount of water supplied.</p><br>
<p>Lake Megami was constructed with the objective of storing excess water from Shiozawa-segi to make up for water shortages. Construction began in April 1942 to improve the water supply for agriculture in the six villages of Ashida, Yokotori, Mitsuwa, Motomaki, Kitamaki and Shiokawa (present day Tateshina, Saku, Tōmi and Ueda). From 1946, construction went ahead under the authorisation of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, but due to a lack of materials and food, construction was suspended in 1949.</p><br>
<p>In 1961, work began on the Prefectural Mimakihara Agricultural Water Supply Improvement Project. The work of upgrading to the current method of supplying water from Araido Weir that comes from each water source started. Adding to the practical use of an already existing irrigation channel, a new tunnel was dug up and maintenance of the main waterway was promoted. Work on suspended Lake Megami project resumed, and while construction was delayed due to difficult terrain, it was completed in 1966. The whole of the Prefectural Mimakihara Agricultural Water Supply Improvement Project was finished in 1976. The construction cost totalled 1.4 billion yen. There were also plans for a hydroelectric power station, but they were not implemented.</p><br>
<h2>Folklore</h2><br>
<h3>Tales of kappa</h3><br>
<p>Where Lake Megami now lies, there was once a pond called Akanuma Pond, in which a kappa called Kawatarō is said to have lived. The wicked Kawatarō would drag passersby into the water. When the samurai Suwa Yoritō heard of this, he went there and expelled the monster. Kawatarō promised to no longer do evil, and that night he left Akanuma Pond and went to live in a pond he made behind Wada-shuku. As the pond appeared overnight, it came to be known as Yo no Ike (the Night Pond), while Akanuma Pond dried up.</p><br>
<h3>Kagihikiishi</h3><br>
<p>Kagihikiishi is a giant stone near Megami Lake. Long ago travellers supposedly prayed at the stone for a safe journey. A historic landmark, today the stone is designated as one of Tateshina&#39;s cultural assets.</p><br>
<p>The kappa from the above story is said to have sat on this stone. Kawatarō would take the shape of a human child and sit upon the stone, inviting passersby to a game of kagihiki (key (or hook) pulling). In the game, the players makes their fingers into the shape of a hook (the Japanese words for key and hook are pronounced the same way), join them up with the other player and pull each other. Those unfortunate enough to play the game with Kawatarō would be dragged into the water by force once they locked fingers with him.</p><br>

<p>Taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Sakudaira, the lake is a fifty-nine minute bus ride and two minute walk away.</p><br>
<p>From Chino on the Chuō Main Line, one can take the bus for forty-five minutes, change to another for ten minutes, then walking two minutes to the lake.</p><br>
<p>Nearby are the bus stops Megami-ko (Lake Megami) and Kagihikiishi.</p><br>
<h3>Car</h3><br>
<p>It takes fifty minutes to cover the thirty-seven kilometres from Saku Interchange on the Jōshin-etsu Expressway.</p><br>

<p>Poeppel Corner Survey Marker is a heritage-listed survey marker at Poeppel Corner on the border corner of Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory. In Queensland it is with the locality of Birdsville in the Shire of Diamantina. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 9 November 2012.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Poeppel Corner was marked in 1880 during the official survey of the western section of the border between Queensland and South Australian undertaken in 1879-1880. It defines the most westerly corner between Queensland and South Australia. Its marking was a surveying feat of its time.</p><br>
<p>Letters Patent issued by Queen Victoria in June 1859 separated the new Colony of Queensland from New South Wales (NSW). They described Queensland&#39;s border as the watershed from Point Danger (28°8"S) west to the Dumaresq River; the Dumaresq, Macintyre and Barwon Rivers to latitude 29 degrees South; and along latitude 29 degrees South to the 141st meridian of East longitude, which was the eastern boundary of South Australia.</p><br>
<p>Although legal opinion advised that the 141st meridian was the western boundary of Queensland, Surveyor-General Augustus Charles Gregory believed otherwise. In a memorandum of 28 September 1860 he wrote:"the western boundary... appears to be the 141st meridian; but it is probable that it was not described in the Letters Patent erecting the Colony, with greater distinctness, expressly with a view to a future adjustment, when more certain information should have been collected as to the natural features of the country... It is now submitted that the 141st meridian passes through the tract of country known as the `Plains of Promise" and that the Eastern shore possesses no harbours. It would therefore be desirable to adopt the 138th meridian as the boundary; as that line would pass through a barren tract of country, and bring Investigators Road within the limits of Queensland."Furthermore, expeditions in 1861-1862 funded by the South Australian, Victorian and Queensland governments to rescue the missing explorers Burke and Wills, who had failed to return from a journey from Cooper Creek to the Gulf of Carpentaria, led to the exploration of an enormous area of the inland and were predicted to stimulate interest in this previously unknown tract of land beyond Queenslands western boundary. Writing to the Secretary of State for the Colonies on 5 September 1861, the Queensland Governor George Bowen indicated his colony&#39;s willingness to protect any settlers so attracted, provided that the western boundary could be extended to include the Gulf. The proposal was accepted on condition that the additional territory could be reclaimed later should another colony be formed in northern Australia.</p><br>
<p>In response, a despatch dated 14 December 1861 from the Secretary of State for the Colonies advised that the proposed annexation to the 138th Meridian of longitude should be revoked under Act 24 and 25 Victoria, c.44. This immediately provoked a despatch from Sir George Bowen, dated 18 January 1862, stating that Queensland had taken provisional control of this area. Subsequently, on 12 April 1862 Letters Patent were issued describing the accession of "so much of our Colony of New South Wales as lies to the northward of the 26th parallel of south latitude and between the 141st and 138th meridian of east longitude...". Thereby two more corners in Queensland&#39;s western boundary were created and the colony acquired part of the Barkly Tableland and the area which later became the Mount Isa mineral field. A revised definition of the extent of Queensland was subsequently proclaimed on 23 June 1862.</p><br>
<p>In July 1862 Sir Charles Nicholson reported to the Secretary of State for the Colonies that: "On the west, the whole of the basin of the Barcoo for several hundred miles, as far as the 142nd meridian of East longitude, is becoming rapidly occupied by squatters, and the authorised possession of the greater part of it has already, I believe, been secured under pastoral licenses...&#39;. Pastoralists began settling the Cooper and Bulloo country and the adjacent portion of South Australia in 1864 with Bulloo Downs being the first run in the Bulloo area. By the end of the decade the Cooper country was also settled.</p><br>
<p>During the 1870s, settlement extended west to the Diamantina, Mulligan and Georgina areas. In 1873, the pastoral districts were named - Gregory South comprised the Bulloo and lower Cooper area and the remainder became Gregory North. Initially runs in both districts were stocked with cattle and sheep. By 1885 all available land in Queenslands far south-west had been claimed. This land, comprising the floodplains of the Mulligan, Georgina, Diamantina and Bulloo Rivers and Cooper Creek, which form part of a vast inland drainage system originating in Queenslands central west and north-west and eventually reaching Lake Eyre, became known as Channel Country. During floods, the semi-arid region becomes a network of channels, watering cattle-fattening grasslands.</p><br>
<p>Agitation by pastoralists in the Cooper region for surveying of the border because of uncertainty as to its position began in the 1870s. In 1877 James McLeod, the new owner of Cullamurra run, applied to the South Australian Commissioner of Crown Lands to have the colony&#39;s border surveyed urgently, after finding himself in dispute with his eastern neighbour John Conrick of Nappa Merrie over their station boundaries.</p><br>
<p>Another factor in the determination of Queensland&#39;s borders was the collection of customs duties at the border and establishment of border customs offices. Inter-colonial border duties were introduced in Australia in the 1850s, after the Murray River became the boundary between New South Wales and Victoria. Their introduction demonstrated that the Australian colonies were developing in divergent and independent ways. As each new colony was declared, it established its own customs administration, which was responsible for the collection of lucrative custom duties and the prevention of smuggling.</p><br>
<p>As the western regions of the colony developed and internal trade routes were established, custom facilities were required along the borders with New South Wales and South Australia. In mid-1862, the Queensland Government had assented to the provisions of the New South Wales Border Customs Act, introduced to provide for a mutual Queensland-New South Wales system of collecting customs duties payable on goods crossing their shared border. Queensland&#39;s Customs Duties Act 1870 provided the colony with independent legislation to regulate the collection of duties on goods imported from other colonies. A small Customs Border Patrol consisting of a police inspector, sub-inspector and four constables was appointed with powers to collect duties from 1 January 1871. They travelled along the Queensland-New South Wales border, collecting duties and keeping careful records regarding the type and value of goods and the amount of monies collected. They also recommended 11 sites suitable for custom offices and these were later established. Those near the South Australian border were at Betoota, Birdsville and Oontoo.</p><br>
<p>The marking of the Queensland-South Australian border was undertaken in 1879-1880 by the South Australian Government as the final section of a survey of its border on the 141st meridian, which had started at the Murray River. William Barron was the surveyor chosen to undertake the border survey, but after surveying from the Murray River to Cameron Corner then 90 miles north to Cooper Creek, his health failed and he was forced to return to Adelaide.</p><br>
<p>Surveyor Augustus Poeppel took over the survey in January 1880, assisted by Lawrence Wells. He arrived at the survey camp at Innamincka on 3 February 1880, spent the following month taking observations and preparing rations and equipment, then on 5 March, with two months&#39; rations and the animals in good condition, the survey team returned to work. They continued the line to the 26th parallel where they met their Queensland colleague Alexander Hutchinson Salmond. Together the surveyors took star observations for latitude to fix the position at 26 degrees S and 141 degrees E (now known as Haddon Corner, named after the nearby pastoral lease). After marking the corner they continued the survey line marking the border with mileposts recording the distance from the surveying starting point at the Murray River.</p><br>
<p>Then on 30 June 1880 Poeppel and his survey party began the westward survey along the 26th parallel, running a series of 10-mile chords and setting the mileposts on the arc of the parallel by calculated offsets. They experienced many hardships on this section of the survey traversing Australia&#39;s most inhospitable country - the vast waterless plains of the Sturt Stony Desert and the salt lakes and sand hills of the Simpson Desert. Their diet was salt beef and damper causing all to develop scurvy. They relied on Aboriginal people to guide them to wells as water was so scarce. They reached the final corner at 26 degrees South 138 degrees East, marking it with a timber post by the end of 1880. Drought forced them to return to Adelaide. Later the South Australian Triangulation Survey reached the border and on checking the mileposts, discovered an error in chainage and the corner post was relocated from the salt lake, Lake Poeppel, to its foreshore. Starting in 1883 Poeppel and Wells began the survey of the Queensland- South Australian border along meridian 141 degrees E.</p><br>
<p>Augustus Poeppel was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1839, the son of an architect. Emigrating with his family in 1849, he settled in South Australia before moving to Victoria to become a mining surveyor and architect. In 1878, after short periods in New Zealand and Western Australia, Poeppel joined the South Australian Lands Department and was soon appointed to the border surveys. During the Queensland- Northern Territory border survey, from the 142-mile post, he suffered from trachoma and lost 13 kg in weight, forcing his withdrawal in July 1885. His health was broken and he later lost sight in one eye. He retired to Melbourne where he died in 1891 aged 52.</p><br>
<p>Lawrence Wells, born in 1860 in South Australia, entered that colonys Survey Department in 1878. In the following year, at the age of 23, he joined the border surveys, eventually assisting with almost the entire survey of the Queensland-South Australian- Northern Territory borders, completed in 1886. Later Wells became a well-known explorer, known as "the last of the great inland explorers". In 1891-92 he accompanied the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, which discovered the East Murchison goldfield; in 1896 he led the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition, investigating northern Western Australia; and in 1903 he led South Australias North-West Prospecting Expedition. Later Wells held administrative positions in the state and federal public services, and was appointed Order of the British Empire in 1937.</p><br>
<p>Since the nineteenth century, various explorers of the Simpson Desert have included a visitation to Poeppel Corner. In 1883 the corner was visited by another South Australian surveyor, Charles Winnecke who, after departing from Farina in northern South Australia, headed north-west to Poeppel Corner, later exploring the south-eastern and north- eastern sections of the desert to assess its pastoral potential. Although disappointed with his findings, he travelled deeper into the desert than anyone before him. The next explorer to visit Poeppel Corner came many years later. In 1936, Edmund Albert (Ted) Colson, a pastoralist of Blood Creek Station, near Abminga, in northern South Australia, became the first European to cross the Simpson Desert. Colson crossed from west to east, travelling along the 26th parallel from Mount Etingambara, hoping to locate the Poeppel Corner post and then follow the border mileposts to Birdsville. However, on his eastward journey, Colson missed the post by 300 metres, but located it on his return journey. To record his passing, he photographed it and nailed a tin plate to it bearing the date and his initials. Other explorations across Simpson Desert, notably those by David Lindsay in 1886 and Cecil Madigan in 1939, came close by Poeppel Corner but did not actually visit it. So, it was not until the 1960s that it was visited again, in a series of vehicular crossings made by Dr Reg Sprigg of Geosurveys Australia. By that time the original corner post had deteriorated due to white ants and dry rot, prompting Sprigg to take it to Adelaide for conservation treatment.&#39;</p><br>
<p>The area was opened up to scientific investigation and tourism by the Sprigg expeditions, together with a well-publicised crossing made in 1966 by the Leyland Brothers which proved that the Simpson Desert was accessible to four-wheel drive vehicles. In 1967 a large part of the desert became protected with the proclamation of South Australias Simpson Desert Conservation Park and Queenslands Simpson Desert National Park; the latter being extended in 1983. By this time, interest in the desert was increasing, with many people visiting Poeppel Corner. In 1986 the Friends of the Simpson Desert Conservation Park was formed in South Australia to assist with the park&#39;s conservation. In 1989 the group erected a replica of the original post at Poeppel Corner. Poeppel Corner is a well-known tourist destination today.</p><br>
<p>Given the enormous physical difficulties which the surveyors faced in the task, their survey of the Queensland-South Australian border was impressive. Today, Global Positioning System (GPS) can pinpoint place by longitude and latitude more accurately. It is now apparent that the intended corner between Queensland and South Australia at 26 degrees S 138 degrees E was not achieved. The Poeppel Corner post does not correlate with the confluence of 26 degrees South 138 degrees East as was originally intended. However, the Queensland Boundaries Declaratory Act 1982 confirmed "that each land boundary of the State... as... defined in the Letters Patent... by reference to a parallel of latitude or a meridian of longitude is and always has been the boundary... permanently fixed by marking it upon on the surface of the earth before 1900...".</p><br>
<p>The corner post as a survey mark is protected under the Survey and Mapping Infrastructure Act 2003 and the Survey and Mapping Infrastructure Regulation 2004 whereby a person must not interfere with a survey mark unless certain conditions are met.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Poeppel Corner Survey Marker is at the westernmost of Queensland&#39;s three south-western corners located at the intersection of the Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory borders, near Lake Poeppel - a salt lake. It is approximately 300 km west of Haddon Corner and 450 km north-west of Cameron Corner. The survey marker is within the Simpson Desert, a vast region in which linear dunes are the main landscape feature. The confluence of 26 degrees S 138 degrees E is between Lake Poeppel (immediately to the west) and a linear dune that trends SSE-NNW a little over half a kilometre to the east. There is a discrepancy of several hundred metres between the specified latitude and longitude and the officially mapped border.</p><br>
<p>Land on the Queensland side of the border is in the Simpson Desert National Park while the South Australian land is part of the Simpson Desert Conservation Park.</p><br>

<p>Poeppel Corner Survey Marker was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 9 November 2012 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>

<p>Poeppel Corner is the result of early cooperation between Australian colonies and provides lasting evidence of the feat of endurance which marking the Queensland-South Australia border involved.</p><br>

<p>Poeppel Corner has an important association with the life and career of Augustus Poeppel (1839-91) and Lawrence Allen Wells (1860-1938), who later surveyed the Queensland-Northern Territory border and whose work contributed to the opening-up of outback Australia for European settlement.</p><br>
<p>The Samuel Noble Monument is a commemorative sculpture located at the parkway median of Quintard Avenue and 11th Street in city of Anniston, Alabama, and was erected in 1895 to honor the town&#39;s founder, Samuel Noble.</p><br>
<p>Noble immigrated with his family to the United States from England. The family owned a weaponry foundry in Georgia during the American Civil War, supplying armaments to the Confederate States Army. Their foundry was subsequently destroyed by the USA Army in 1864. At the wars end, they began rebuilding their business in Georgia, and purchased land in Calhoun County, Alabama as an expansion. They went into partnership with former Union general Daniel Tyler and formed the Woodstock Iron Company, originally naming the budding community Woodstock. It was renamed Anniston, after Tylers daughter-in-law, to avoid confusion over another Woodstock located between Bibb and Tuscaloosa counties. Noble and Tyler personally designed the layout of their town that housed only company employees. The Woodstock Company constructed the buildings and installed the infrastructure.</p><br>
<p>Several years after Nobles 1888 death, $5,400 was raised for a memorial, and Anniston accepted a design of a granite and white marble statue from Durham and Company in Charlotte, North Carolina. The actual sculpting was done by unknown persons in Italy under contract to Morris Brothers in Memphis, Tennessee. The public unveiling of the statue by Nobles granddaughter Elizabeth Roberts, was preceded by a parade through Anniston.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 as an example of sculpture used to commemorate historical events or persons. Although the Encyclopedia of Alabama credits all concerned in the establishment and development of Anniston, the townspeople who commissioned the statue and the National Park Service give recognition only to Noble as the actual founder.</p><br>
<p>Kabushima is a small island located in Hachinohe, Aomori, in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. The island is noted as a nesting ground for Black-tailed gulls and has been protected as a National Natural Monument of Japan since 1922. Part of the Tanesashi Coast, it was incorporated into the Sanriku Fukkō National Park from May 2013,</p><br>
<h2>Kabushima</h2><br>
<p>The island has a length of 300 m and width of 140 m, with a highest elevation of around 18 m. The total area of the island is approximately 17,000 square meters.</p><br>

<h2>Kabushima Shrine</h2><br>
<p>Kabushima Shrine is a small Shinto shrine located on Kabushima island. The shrine is a branch of the Itsukushima Shrine and is dedicated to Benzaiten. According to shrine legend, it was established in 1269 by local fishermen. The shrine burned completely down on 5 November 2015. The main festival of the shrine is held on the third Sunday of April.</p><br>

<p>The East Charlemont District School is a historic district school building at 1811 Massachusetts Route 2 in Charlemont, Massachusetts. Built in 1828, it is one of a small number of surviving brick district schoolhouses in the state of Massachusetts. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The East Charlemont District School stands in a rural setting in eastern Charlemont, on the north side of MA 2 west of its junction with East Oxbow Road and crossing of Oxbow Brook. It is a single-story brick structure, with a gabled slate roof. A wood-frame ell extends to one side. The main facade is four bays wide, with the main entrance in the rightmost bay, topped by a four-light transom window. The other bays are unevenly spaced sash windows set in rectangular openings. There is a chimney at the left of the structure.</p><br>
<p>The school was built in 1828, at a time when there was a small village surrounding the property. It was built largely by the efforts of East Charlemont villagers, its bricks manufactured at a nearby brickyard. The school remained in active use as a school until 1944, by which time a significant number of the village buildings had been demolished, and it served only a small number of students. Its interior has remained remarkably unchanged since its closure, in part due to a decision by the town to preserve the building, using it only for local meetings and educational tours for children.</p><br>
<p>The United Bank Building is a historic commercial building at 19-21 Main Street in downtown New Milford, Connecticut. Built 1902-04, it is a prominent local example of Classical Revival architecture, built to house two banks whose previous buildings had been destroyed in a devastating fire. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and is a contributing element of the New Milford Center Historic District.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The United Bank Building occupies a prominent location in downtown New Milford, at the top end of Bank Street, one of its main commercial streets, where it meets the town common. It is a two-story masonry structure, built out of buff-colored brick with brownstone trim. Its main facade, facing main street and the common, is three bays wide, articulated by broad piers which rise to a multilevel cornice and parapeted roof. The main entrance is in the central bay, recessed in a tall round-arch opening. Above the arch is a recessed panel incised with the building name, with a decorative cartouche above that, flanked by sash windows. The flanking bays each have three-part window groups in both the first and second levels. The interior has a central vestibule and hall, which separate the spaces historically allotted to the two banks that were its initial occupants.</p><br>
<p>On May 5, 1902, a fire struck the New England House, a locally well known tavern and inn located at the corner of Bank and Main Streets. The conflagration also consumed the adjacent buildings of the New Milford Savings Bank and the New Milford First National Bank, located down Bank Street. The two banks immediately organized to rebuild, quickly agreeing in principal to build a joint facility on the site of the tavern. Their committee accepted a design from Wilson Potter, an architect then based in New York City. The large-scale features of the building and its prominent setting on the town common make it an imposing feature of the town&#39;s commercial district.</p><br>
<p>The Cheshire Town Hall Complex is a three-building set of municipal structures at the junction of Church and Depot Streets in Cheshire, Massachusetts. Built in 1898, the town hall is a prominent local example of Colonial Revival architecture, and the assemblage form an imposing civic statement in the village center. The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The town of Chesire is a small rural community in central Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Its main village is located near the western bank of the Hoosic River, just north of the Cheshire Reservoir. Its municipal complex is located on a triangular parcel bounded on the north by Church Street and the south by Depot Street. Prominently facing the intersection is the town hall and library, a cruciform two-story brick building with a hip roof and Colonial Revival features. Just behind it is a small single-story building housing the building department offices, whose originally function was as a ticket office and waiting room for the local street car. Across the parking lot, at the eastern end of the property, is a two-story brick building, which formerly housed the trolley power station but now houses the town police and fire offices. The parking area is where the Berkshire Street Railway originally turned around. In the triangular grassy area at the front of the town hall is a memorial fountain to the towns Revolutionary War participation, and there is also a monument honoring the towns World War I soldiers.</p><br>
<p>The towns 19th-century town hall, a wood-frame building, was located on State Road near the Baptist church; it is no longer standing. This town hall was built in 1898, after the state mandated town records be stored in fireproof vaults. At the same time, the Cheshire Library Association, a private library founded in 1866, was seeking a larger space for its collection. The new building was designed by Emory Ellsworth. The two former trolley buildings were built sometime after 1904, for service that had been inaugurated in 1902. Service on that line was discontinued in 1932, and the town purchased the two buildings in 1935. The ticket office became the town post office in 1937, and served that role until 1971. The power building was occupied by the towns fire and police functions in 1935.</p><br>
<p>The Gordon–Van Tine Company Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located east of downtown Davenport, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. The customer could choose from a variety of floor plans, finishes, design features, and equipment choices. The lumber for the houses came from company mills in Washington state and Mississippi. They sold an estimated 54,000 homes under the Gordon–Van Tine name, and another 20,000 under the Montgomery Ward name. The company remained in operation into the post–World War II housing boom when it was sold to a Cincinnati salvage firm that liquidated it.</p><br>
<p>Two of the buildings in the historic district are being transformed into an apartment complex. The four-story brick office building is the more ornate of the two. The factory was located in a five-story brick building next door. The office building will house 15 apartments, and the production facility will house 98.</p><br>
<p>51 South Second Street is a residential and commercial property located in Newport, Pennsylvania.</p><br>
<p>Built around 1890, this two story side gabled brick on stone foundation has five bays, modern storefront on the north side of the first story, elaborate incising on window pediments and frieze board, eave brackets, a one-story 2/3 front porch with gingerbread and turned wooden columns.</p><br>

<p>The Saugatuck Pump House, now the Pump House Museum, is a historic building located at 735 Park Street in Saugatuck, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>At the beginning of the 1900s, Saugatuck was becoming more popular as a resort town. The municipal water system at the time consisted of a series of cisterns coupled with private wells. Several fires destroyed wooden buildings in town, and the system was proving inadequate. After yet another fire in November 1903, a special election was called to approve the issuance of $8500 in bonds to pay for design and construction of a system of water works. The measure passed, and in early 1904, the village hired John W. Alvord to prepare plans for and superintend the construction of a 100,000-gallon reservoir located at a high point west of the Kalamazoo River, along with pumps to feed the reservoir and a main running back into the town. Work began in May, and what is now the south section of this pump house was completed by mid-August. The entire system was operational by October 1904.</p><br>
<p>When the system was completed, this pump house contained two 25-horsepower gasoline-powered pumps that drew water from seven wells and pumped it to a nearby reservoir. In 1912, the pump house was enlarged with another section to house an electric power generating station. The pump house continued to be used for both water and electric generation until approximately 1930.</p><br>
<p>After the pumping and electric generation facilities had been moved to another location, the pump house was abandoned. By 1970, the building was in complete disrepair, and a portion of one wall had fallen in. The building was slated for demolition. However, in 1972, Dr. and Mrs. William Shorey of Chicago offered to lease the property from the village for twenty years to serve as their cottage, in exchange for restoring the building. The village agreed, and the couple removed the old equipment, redid brickwork, installed a new roof and new floor, and converted the building into a cottage.</p><br>
<p>By 1992 the lease had expired and William Shorey had died. The city leased the pump house to the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society, who refurbished the interior and opened it as the Pump House Museum. In 2001, the Society added an entrance pavilion. Inside the Museum, volunteers design and construct a new exhibit every year, focusing on local history.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Saugatuck Pump House is a single story red brick structure with a hipped roof on a concrete and block foundation. The building was construted in two parts, and measures 58 feet in length along the river sides by 27 feet wide (in the 1912 north section) or 22 feet wide (in the 1904 south section). It is located on the west bank of the Kalamazoo River, across from downtown Saugatuck. The hipped roof ends in flaring eaves with wide overhangs and exposed rafter ends. Four sets of triple windows topped by white-painted colonial caps are located on the river side. Two triple windows and two double windows are in the low road side. The roof, originally clad with slate, is covered with asphalt shingles.</p><br>
<p>The interior is divided into two connected rooms and a small bathroom. It still contains the original wood-finished ceilings, along with some original exposed brick walls. Other sections of the interior are finished with sheetrock. A paved entry trail and small garden are outside the building.</p><br>
<p>The Winslow School and Littlefield Library are a pair of historic municipal buildings at 250 and 252 Middlesex Road in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts. Built in 1890 and 1904, both are architect-designed buildings of high quality, funded by local benefactors. The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Winslow School and Littlefield Library occupy a shared lot on the north side of Tyngsborough&#39;s town center, on the west side of Middlesex Road just north of its junction with Winslow and Farwell Roads. The school is a 1-1/2 story wood frame structure, covered by a hip roof and finished in wooden clapboards. Its central portion is flanked on both sides by single-story wings. Bands of windows flank the central entrance, which is sheltered by a gabled portico. The library stands just north of the school; it is a single-story brick building of smaller scale, with a gabled roof and gabled entrance portico. It is the only brick building in the town center.</p><br>
<p>The school was built in 1890 with funding provided by Sara Tyng Winslow, two years after the town embarked on a consolidation of its district schools. Originally located nearer the Congregational church, it was designed by F.H. Bacon after a more expensive design by Frederick Stickney was rejected. The school was enlarged in 1915, at which time it was given a more Bungalow-style appearance, and was moved to its present site about 1940.</p><br>
<p>The library, founded in 1831, was at first housed in the town hall, and was placed in the Winslow School between 1893 and 1901. It then moved back to Town Hall, awaiting construction of the present building, which was completed in 1905 to a design by Stickney & Austin. Funds for the building, as well as an endowment for further acquisitions, were donated by Mrs. Lucy Littlefield on the stipulation that the library be named in honor of her daughter.</p><br>
<p>The school was closed in the 1980s, and the library was relocated to more modern facilities in the 1990s. Both buildings stand vacant as of 2017.</p><br>
<p>Istállós-kő is a mountain in Hungary. With a height of 958.1 m above sea level it is the second highest mountain of the Bükk and the sixth highest of Hungary. Before 2014 it was considered to be the highest point of the area, but according to recent surveys Szilvási-kő is 960.715 m meters tall.</p><br>
<p>It is easily accessible from Szilvásvárad on a few hundred meters long tourist path, which leads to a cave in the mountain.</p><br>
<h2>Istállós-kő cave</h2><br>
<p>The cave was first explored by Pál Roskó in 1911. It is a rich archaeological site with 30,000-40,000 year old finds including cave bear and Bison latifrons bones and tusks, stone and bone tools and a Paleolithic hearth now displayed in the Hungarian National Museum.</p><br>
<p>The site was later excavated by Ottokár Kadić in 1929 and Mária Mottl in 1938; its planned and detailed excavation started in 1947 and was led by László Vértes. Based on fill stratification and animal remains used as period indicators, the archaeologists explored the cave&#39;s history, and determined the age of the three cultural layers and the characteristics of the human population(s) that lived there. The cave gained protected status in 1944 and specially protected status in 1982.</p><br>
<p>The newest excavations started in 2000 and were led by Árpád Ringer. The importance of the cave lies in the findings of 66 different Ice Age species, which makes its fauna the richest among Aurignacian faunas in Europe; three new mammal species and twenty new bird species were described based on its microfauna.</p><br>
<p>The Watertown Center Historic District encompasses the historic village center of Watertown, Connecticut. It exhibits architectural and historic changes from the early 1700s into the 20th century. It is roughly bounded by Main, Warren, North, Woodbury, Woodruff, and Academy Hill Roads, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The area that is now Watertown was settled in the early 18th century, but was not incorporated as a separate town until 1780. Its town green, extending north-south between United States Route 6 and Woodbury Road, was laid out in 1772, and a colonial meetinghouse built at its edge (where the present town hall now stands), the area began to take shape as a village center. Steele Brooke, which flows east of the village, was developed as a modest industrial area in the 19th century, and the village was eventually populated with shops and several churches. The houses and institutional buildings built in the village before about 1930 represent an unusually high level of quality and diversity of style, and include a significant number of architect-designed buildings.</p><br>
<p>The historic district covers about 45 acre, and is roughly centered on the town green and a stretch of US 6 between Woodbury Road and Main Street. At its eastern edge, Main Street, it abuts part of the town&#39;s modern central business district. Its southern boundary is Woodbury Road and Academy Hill Road, extending further south on Woodruff Road almost to Scott Avenue. It extends northward along Main and North Streets to include Warren Street. The green includes several small war memorials and a gazebo. The typical streetscape in the district is residential, with stylistically diverse buildings of high quality. Important non-residential buildings including the 1839 Greek Revival Congregational Church, and the Richardsonian Romanesque former library, built in 1883. The present town hall, built in 1894 in brick, is a fine example of Colonial Revival architecture. The United Methodist Church is an architect-designed Shingle Style structure built in 1898, and the Episcopal church is a fine example of an English country church designed by Allen and Collins of Boston, Massachusetts.</p><br>
<p>The Edison Commercial Historic District is a 5 acre historic district in Edison, Georgia, United States that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It included 22 contributing buildings and a contributing structure, plus three buildings not deemed to contribute to the historic character of the district.</p><br>
<p>Most of the buildings are brick commercial buildings, and either one- or two-story. The majority front on Hartford Street, the main east-west street through the town.</p><br>

<p>The Arlington United Methodist Church is the only Methodist church in Arlington, Georgia. The church congregation was founded in 1873 and met in a small schoolhouse, then built a white wooden church in 1876. The present church was built in 1908 and was known as Arlington Methodist Episcopal Church, South. It is Romanesque Revival in style and was designed by architect T. Firth Lockwood, Sr. It is built of red brick and has two towers of different heights.</p><br>
<p>The church changed its name in 1939 by dropping the word "Episcopal" and in 1969 by adding the word "United".</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 as "Arlington Methodist Episcopal Church, South".</p><br>

<p>The Francis Metallic Surfboat is a boat, currently housed at 130 West Center Street in Douglas, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It is one of two known surviving examples of its kind, one of the first type of coastal rescue craft used.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Francis Metallic Surfboat was designed by Joseph Francis, an inventor who specialized in inventing and constructing maritime lifesaving equipment. Francis constructed 137 of these vessels from about 1849 to 1857, of which 48 were used on the Great Lakes. This particular boat dates from approximately 1854, and was in use from 1854 until at least 1863. It was originally stationed near the mouth of the Kalamazoo River.</p><br>
<p>The vessel gradually deteriorated until the 1930s, after which its remains were put into storage. In about 2006, volunteers from the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society (SDHS) restored the boat. In 2011, the Society constructed a dedicated building in Douglas to display the vessel. The boat remains on display in the building in Douglas.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Francis Metallic Surfboat is a 26-foot vessel with as six-foot beam. The hull is made of iron. The boat was constructed built using an innovative metal fabricating technique invented by Joseph Francis. The boat is an example of a distinctly American type of rescue craft known as the "pulling" surfboat, which is designed to be pulled through the water by oars, rather than propelled by a sail or motor.</p><br>
<p>The David Welch House is a historic house at Potash and Milton Streets in Milton village of Litchfield, Connecticut. Built in 1756 by one of the first colonial settlers of the area, it is one of the village&#39;s oldest buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The David Welch House stands near the easternmost end of the village of Milton, on the north side of the junction of Milton and Potash Roads. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. Many of the clapboards and windows in the building are original. The house is eight bays wide, consisting of an original five-bay section and a later three-bay addition to the right, and has a saltbox profile with an integral leanto to the rear. Both the main section and the addition have entrances at their respective centers. That of the main house is elaborate, with sidelight windows, pilasters, transom window, and entablature. A large brick chimney rises at the center behind that entrance. The interior retains many original 18th-century features, including wainscoting on the walls and paneled fireplace surrounds.</p><br>
<p>The house was built in 1756 by John Marsh Jr., one of the early proprietors of Litchfield, for his daughter Irene and son-in-law David Welch. Local lore has it that Irene dubbed the village "Milton" that arose after the mills that lined the branches of the Shepaug River that flowed nearby. Welch owned and operated several iron foundries in the area, and was a prominent figure in local politics, serving in the state legislature. Both Welch and his son John were active participants in the American Revolutionary War. The three-bay addition was built before the war, from which the Welches ran a store. The house remained in the Welch family until 1860.</p><br>
<p>The West End Commercial District encompasses a single city block of commercial buildings in Winsted, Connecticut. The block, consisting of the north side of Main Street between Union and Elm Streets, is the city&#39;s largest grouping of late-19th and early-20th century commercial buildings to survive flooding and redevelopment. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Winsted&#39;s West End commercial block consists of eight buildings lining the north side of Main Street (United States Route 44) between Union and Elm Streets. All have primarily brick facades and are between two and four stories in height. Architectural elements are generally of commercial Italianate or Romanesque style, and all of the buildings have projecting decorative cornices. The ground floor storefronts have generally been modernized, although some original details are still visible. There is only one non-contributing building, a small single-story structure built as infill into one of the two alleys on the block.</p><br>
<p>Winsted&#39;s commercial and industrial buildings of the late 19th century once lined both sides of Main Street. The buildings on the south side of the road were swept away during devastating flooding in 1955, and the city decided to widen the road rather rebuild. The city had developed beginning with the arrival of the railroad in 1849, and rapidly grew as an urban industrial center, gaining a measure of independence as an independent borough of Winchester in 1858. The largest building in the West End, the Winchester Hotel, was built in 1898 to replace an older hotel.</p><br>
<p>The George W. Jackson House, in Baconton, Georgia, is a historic house built in 1898 that now serves as Baconton&#39;s city hall. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The main house was built in 1898 in Late Victorian style. It is a two-story frame house on a brick pier foundation.</p><br>
<p>The house was occupied by George Washington Jackson (1845-1914) then Eulelia Peacock Jackson (1854-1932).</p><br>
<p>The east side of the town of Baconton was developed from land owned by G.W. Jackson, and centered around the Methodist Church to which Jackson belonged.</p><br>
<p>It was one of a number of Baconton area historic properties and districts that were evaluated for NRHP listing in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The 1983 listing included five contributing buildings and one contributing site on 19 acre.</p><br>
<p>By 2017, development has changed the general area somewhat since the house was listed in 1983. Back then, there were pecan groves stretch on the east, south, and northeast of the house; in 2017 there are baseball fields northeast of the Walton St. & Jackson St. intersection that seem not to have been present in 1983.</p><br>
<p>In 1983 there were several dilapidated one-story outbuildings: a barn, a wagon shed, and a crib. And there was a one-story cook&#39;s house with two exterior brick chimneys, located on Jackson Street south of the main house. By 2013, the outbuildings are not apparent in Google satellite or street view, suggesting they are gone.</p><br>
<p>The Ewiges Meer is the largest raised bog lake in Germany, with an area of 89.2 hectares . Its surface lies at about 8.5 metres above sea level . The lake is surrounded by an extensive complex of unutilised areas, that exhibit the actual raised bog profile and, together with the lake, form the 1,180 hectare of Ewiges Meer Nature Reserve .</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The nature reserve lies on the border of the counties of Wittmund and Aurich near the village of Eversmeer in East Frisia. It belongs to the Nenndorf Raised Bog (Nenndorfer Hochmoor) on the shoulder of the Oldenburg-East Frisian Geest Ridge and forms the core zone of the roughly 33-square kilometre Großes Moor bog complex near Aurich.</p><br>

<p>The Walton Street–Church Street Historic District in Baconton, Georgia is a 66 acre historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The listing included 17 contributing buildings.</p><br>
<p>It includes 15 houses constructed between 1900 and the 1930s, in styles including late Victorian Eclectic, Neo-classical, and Georgian styles, plus some influence of the Prairie School and the Craftsman movements. Most are wood frame buildings; some have brick veneer. Thomas Jefferson Glausier, a builder, may be associated with some of the buildings.</p><br>
<p>It includes a turn-of-the-20th-century historic Methodist church, prominent on the corner of Walton Street and Church Street, and a brick school.</p><br>
<p>The east side of Baconton was developed on land formerly owned by George W. Jackson. The George W. Jackson House stands at the former end of Walton Street, outside the district, and is separately listed on the National Register.</p><br>
<p>The district was one of three in Baconton listed on the National Register at the same time as the Jackson house, as part of a review of all historic resources in Baconton.</p><br>
<p>North Bald Cap, formerly known as Mount Success, is a mountain located in Coos County, New Hampshire. The mountain has an elevation of 2,893 ft and is a part of the Mahoosuc Range of the White Mountains.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The mountain is flanked by Mount Success to the northeast and Bald Cap mountain to the southwest. There is currently no trail to the summit of North Bald Cap, but access can be gained by following Ball Cap Road, off Success Pond Road, to a swamp at the end of an old skid road to the south of the mountain. From there one must bushwhack to the summit. On the northeast side of the mountain, there are ledges that are popular with mountain climbers.</p><br>
<p>The mountain is part of the Androscoggin River watershed. The east side of the mountain drains to the North Branch of Horne Brook, while the west side drains to the South Branch of Horne Brook. The two branches flow north to form Horne Brook, which flows northwest to the Androscoggin in the northeast part of Berlin.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>Before 1936, the mountain was known as "Mount Success", with the mountain today known by that name being called "Ingalls Mountain". With the renaming of Ingalls Mountain to Mount Success, North Bald Cap received its present name.</p><br>
<p>Many locals refer to the mountain as "Bald Cap Dome", due to its domed shape, a term which is said to be a leftover from the old logging days.</p><br>
<p>Ounastunturi is a fell in Finland. It is situated in the sub-region Tunturi Lapland of the Lapland region, in the north of the country, about 900 km north of the capital Helsinki. It lies in the northern part of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The Pallas-Ounastunturi National Park, established in 1938 and included in the former in 2005, was partly named after the fell. Ounastunturi is separated from the neighbouring Pallastunturi fell in the south by the Hannukuru valley.</p><br>
<p>The nearest large lake is Ounasjärvi north of the fell. The highest summit is Outtakka with a height of 723 m a.s.l. in the southern part of the fell (68.2339&deg; latitude, 23.8278&deg; longitude), followed by Pyhäkero with a height of 713 m a.s.l. in the north (68.3253&deg; latitude, 23.7711&deg; longitude). North of Ounastunturi and the valley containing Ounasjärvi lake the terrain rises towards the highest parts of Finland, towards the south beyond Pallastunturi it is comparatively flat.</p><br>
<p>The region around Ounastunturi is almost uninhabitated with less than 2 people per square kilometre. The nearest larger settlement is Enontekiö 16.6 km north of the mountain. The vegetation is sparse and consists mostly of low subarctic woodland.</p><br>
<p>The fell is in the subarctic climate zone with a mean annual temperature of -4 °C. The warmest month is July with an average temperature of 14 °C, the coldest is February with a mean temperature of -18 °C.</p><br>
<p>The Navigation Structures at Saugatuck Harbor consist of two piers flanking the mouth of the Kalamazoo River on the shore of Lake Michigan near Saugatuck, Michigan. The structures were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Saugatuck began its history as a lumber and shipping town, with shipments operating out of the city as early as the 1830s. In 1838, the Federal government erected a lighthouse to serve the port. Some time in the mid-1800s, private parties dredged the Kalamazoo River channel and constructed two slab piers at the mouth of the river. In 1869, the United States Army Corps of Engineers began work improving the Saugatuck harbor, and by 1883, the piers had been extended to a total length of 1,907 feet on the north and 3,863 feet on the south side. The channel, however, required constant dredging, and would quickly silt up.</p><br>
<p>In 1896, to solve the maintenance problem, the Corps proposed abandoning the existing river mouth channel and cutting a new channel from the Kalamazoo River to Lake Michigan north of the existing river entrance. The proposed location cut through gravel, and was less prone to silting. In 1903, the firm of Burke, Smith & Nelson was contracted to construct the piers, and in 1904 land was obtained and construction began. Cribs for the piers were constructed in Muskegon and towed to Saugatuck for placement, and the balance of the work was done in place. Construction was completed in 1906 at a total cost of $273,783.23. In 1936-38, repairs were made to the structure and the piers capped with concrete. Further repairs and upgrades were made in 1974 and again in 1981/82.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Navigation Structures at Saugatuck Harbor consist of two piers, 200 feet apart and parallel, flanking the mouth of the Kalamazoo River. The North Pier is 2,778 feet long and the South Pier is 2,514 feet long. Lights are located on the end of each pier. The extreme outer portions of the piers are stone filled timber cribs, each 24 feet wide and 100 feet long Riprap is placed on both sides of the crib. Inland of the cribs, the remaining pier sections are constructed of wood piling spaced 13 feet apart and filled with stone. The shoreward sections are 13–14 feet wide and built with wood pilings and filled with stone. The piers were capped with concrete in the 1930s.</p><br>
<p>The E.A. Wildman & Co. Tobacco Warehouse is a historic commercial/industrial building at 34 Bridge Street  in New Milford, Connecticut. Built in 1870, it is the oldest of the surviving tobacco warehouses in the town, which was a major tobacco processing center in the region. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The building has most recently served as a hotel.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Wildman Tobacco Warehouse is a 2-1/2 story frame structure standing on the south side of Bridge Street in central New Milford, between Middle Street and the tracks of the Housatonic Railroad. It is long (167 ft), with three sections. The front two, a total of sixteen bays long, were built on site, while the rear four bays are an originally separate warehouse that was moved to the site in 1901. This rear section is an extremely rare example of a rural packing barn. The building has a five-bay facade, with a single-story shed-roof porch across its width, and the entrance at the center.</p><br>
<p>The warehouses front section was built in 1870, the early period in the regions development as a tobacco growing area. By World War I, New Milford was a major producer of cigar wrapping tobacco leaf, and supported twelve packing and warehousing operations. The Wildman Warehouse was one of the first to be built by a commercial packer, where earlier leaf packing operations had typically been run by farmers. Edward Wildman was a native of Brookfield, who served as agent to a major tobacco firm based in New York City. His warehouse was expanded in 1874, and again in 1901 after a surge in production. The building remained in use for tobacco production until about 1950.</p><br>
<p>The Baconton Commercial Historic District is a 10 acre historic district in Baconton, Georgia that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>It then included 12 contributing buildings, which are mostly one-story brick commercial or warehouse buildings. The district also includes the Winchester Hotel, on E. Durham Street, which was built in the 1890s, enlarged after 190o, and operated into the 1930s. In 1983 it was a single family residence. Adjacent is the former home of the bookkeeper of the Jackson Supply Company.</p><br>
<p>Major Robert J. Bacon, Sr., was the original landowner of the area.</p><br>
<p>The district was one of three in Baconton listed on the National Register at the same time, as part of a review of all historic resources in Baconton, along with the George W. Jackson House.</p><br>
<p>The Petoskey Downtown Historic District is a commercial historic district, roughly bounded by Rose, Division, Michigan, and Petoskey streets in Petoskey, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In the 1850s, both a Presbyterian and a Catholic mission were established near modern-day Petoskey to minister to the Odawa residents of the area. By the 1860s, more European residents moved into Petoskey, and pioneer Hazen Ingalls constructed a dock for shipping and built the first store in what is now downtown Petoskey. In 1874, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad began service to Petoskey, and the area soon grew immensely. The area already had three hotels by 1875. The village of Petoskey was incorporated in 1879; at that time a number of brick commercial structures began to be constructed in the downtown area.</p><br>
<p>Construction continued through the turn of the century, and construction of small scale commercial structures continued into the 1940s.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Petoskey Downtown Historic District consists of 102 commercial properties and two institutional structures, located along 10 blocks in Petoskey&#39;s business district, primarily along East Mitchell and Howard streets. The contributing structures range in date from 1879 to the 1920s. The old tracks from the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad run diagonally through the district, and open land bordering the track is landscaped as a park. At its north end, the district includes the old Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Depot and the Perry Hotel, both reminders of the early tourism history of the city.</p><br>
<p>The majority of the structures in the district are commercial in nature, and can be grouped by significant uses and architectural styles:</p><br>
<p>Residential-type commercial properties (319–331 Bay and 110–121 Howard): The two blocks at the northwestern edge of the district (the 300 block of Bay and 100 block of Howard) contain small residential-type commercial structures. Some serve as boarding houses, and others have been converted from residential to commercial use.</p><br>
<p>Classical Revival structures (300 & 415 Howard; 307–09, 407, and 452 East Lake; 100 Lewis; 307, 408, & 447 East Mitchell): A number of structures exhibit Classical Revival architectural styling. The most distinctive is the c. 1890 First State Bank at 300 Howard, in part because of its prominent corner location and its cohesive facade with a prominent Doric portico. Other Classical Revival buildings include the 1902 Matthew Pietrowitcz building at 415 Howard, the 1907 G&A building at 307-09 East Lake, and the c. 1917 Petoskey Cigar Company building at 407 East Lake. Each of these buildings have upper story arches unifying the Classical design. The 1899 Perry Hotel at 100 Lewis, the first brick hotel in the city, exudes an impressive monumental quality due to its prominent Doric entrance.</p><br>
<p>Italianate "Commercial Palaces" (329–31 & 401–03 East Lake; 320 & 412 East Mitchell): These structures include the 1879 Central Drug Store at 401–03 East Lake, the first brick building constructed in the district. The structures incorporate iron elements such as window hood and cornices which were marketed after the Civil War.</p><br>
<p>Queen Anne structures (307, 310–12, & 419 Howard): The building at 307 Howard had second story oriel windows and detailed brickwork that is characteristically Queen Anne in style. The building at 310–12 Howard includes strong Classical Revival elements, and the 1893 Schilling building at 419 Howard contains strong Romanesque Revival details.</p><br>
<p>Spanish Mission (105 Lewis and 210 Howard): The 1899 depot at 105 Lewis and the commercial building at 210 Howard have characteristic stepped gables and parapets of the Spanish Mission style.</p><br>
<p>Kelso Wash is an ephemeral stream in San Bernardino County, California, United States, that drains into Soda Lake . The town of Kelso lies southeast of the wash .</p><br>
<p>Kelso Wash lies within the Mojave National Preserve. It originates at Cima, between the Kelso Mountains to the west and the Providence Mountains to the east as a southward flowing wash, where it receives the Cedar Wash from northeast and washes draining the Marl Mountains from northwest. The Cima Dome lies nearby. The area of Cima separates its valley from Ivanpah Valley. It then turns west north of the Kelso Dunes and receives first the Cottonwood Wash from southeast, which drains the southern Providence Mountains and the Granite Mountains, and then the Budweiser Wash from the south, which drains the Bristol Mountains, Granite Mountains and Old Dad Mountains. Kelso Wash then passes northwestward between Devils Playground to the north and Bristol Mountains to the south. It eventually ends into Soda Lake. It is the largest wash draining the area of Soda Lake.</p><br>
<p>Precipitation in the area averages about 4 -. Groundwater close to the surface and runoff sustain Kelso Wash. The Union Pacific Railroad closely parallels the wash.</p><br>
<p>Together with the Mojave River, it supplies water to the Mojave River sink area and Lake Tuendae. In 1984 Kelso Wash was proposed to be part of the source of sand for the Kelso Dunes.</p><br>
<p>Pincey Brook is a watercourse in the Uttlesford and Epping Forest districts of Essex, England, and is a tributary to the River Stort.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>Pincey Brook rises at the south-east edge of London Stansted Airport, just north from the A120 road, and in the civil parish of Takeley. It runs south through Hatfield Broad Oak parish, passing the hamlet of Bush End, and, further south, Hatfield Broad Oak village at its western edge, afterwards turning southwest to become part of the parish boundary with Hatfield Heath. Curving further towards the west through Hatfield Heath parish, it becomes the northern boundary of the Down Hall Estate. For 700 yd beyond the western edge of the Estate, it becomes the parish boundary between Hatfield Heath and Matching, before flowing into Sheering parish for 800 yards (730 m), after which it becomes the parish boundary between Matching and Sheering, this for 1500 yards (1,400 m), and to the M11 motorway. A culvert takes the Brook under the motorway, after which it remains in Sheering until 550 yards (500 m) from the northeast edge of Gibberd Garden. From here the Brook becomes the boundary between Sheering and the Essex town of Harlow, until it flows into the River Stort at a triangulation with Sawbridgeworth parish in Hertfordshire. The total length is approximately 13.5 mi.</p><br>

<p>Between 1999 and 2003, during Stansted Airport expansion, evidence was found of Middle Bronze Age settlement close to Princey Brook.</p><br>
<p>A sport mare, born 1985, was named Pincey Brook.</p><br>
<p>In 2013, a study was reported in the journal Limnologica - Ecology and Management of Inland Waters, concerning the probability of the incipient invasiveness of signal crayfish within the River Stort catchment area, including Pincey Brook.</p><br>
<p>The Crook House in Cheyenne, Wyoming, also known as Gibbons House, is a Queen Anne-style house that was built in 1890. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.</p><br>
<p>It is associated with Dr. William W. Crook, who was one of the first doctors in Cheyenne, arriving in 1875 after practicing in Kansas. The house was for a while the state Governor&#39;s Mansion.</p><br>
<p>Its National Register nomination asserted it is one of few remaining examples of Queen Anne architecture in Wyoming. In this example, the "foremost architectural components are visible at the front elevations and include a projecting, gabled bay, a pedimented, hip-roofed veranda, and a substantial square tower with a pyramidal roof and ornate finial. These main parts are massed in an asymmetrical, but balanced, composition."</p><br>
<p>The listing included three other contributing buildings: a carriage house (1885) with chutes in place from a grain bin in its second story, a coal storage house, and a former chicken house that is now a covered patio.</p><br>
<p>The Second Townsville General Hospital is a heritage-listed former hospital and now an apartment building at 24 Eyre Street, North Ward, Townsville, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Donoghue & Fulton and built from 1945 to 1951. It is also known as North Ward Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 26 April 1996.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The first hospital in Townsville was opened in a cottage on The Strand in 1866 and was known as the Burdekin and Flinders Districts Hospital. In 1881 it was relocated to the present site on Stanton Hill. A two storied building was completed in 1882 and numerous buildings were subsequently built on the site.</p><br>
<p>The Second Townsville General Hospital was designed by Donoghue and Fulton between 1935 and 1939 but construction was delayed due to the outbreak of World War II. On 11 November 1945, the foundation stone was laid by the Queensland Treasurer, Ned Hanlon. On 21 April 1951 he officially opened the hospital in his role as Queensland Premier. The new hospital was to be the largest facility of its type in Australia outside a capital city and had been built at a cost of approximately &pound;500,000 for building and equipment. It opened with approximately 270 beds. Dr Kiernan Dorney was the medical superintendent and the hospital claimed to have the largest staff of specialists outside Brisbane.</p><br>
<p>Between 1932 and 1945 was a period of rapid development in hospitals in Queensland. This was partly due to the passing of the Hospital Act in 1923 which laid the foundations for the Queensland Government to resume responsibility for financing and administrating public hospitals which had previously been run by voluntary committees. Under the Act the state was divided into regions and regions into districts. Each region was controlled from a base hospital which coordinated other hospitals in the region. Hospital boards, dominated by government representatives and excluding members of the medical profession, were created to oversee the administration of the hospitals. The Queensland Government was to provide 60% of the running costs while the remainder was to be met by local government. The boards had the power under the act to appoint their own architects. Ned Hanlon, who was minister for Health and Home Affairs from 1935 until 1944 and premier from 1946 until 1952, was responsible for many of the projects undertaken at this time. The Free Hospital Scheme was introduced to Queensland in 1946.</p><br>
<p>Tenders were called in 1947 for new nurses quarters at Townsville designed by JP Donoghue, Cusick and Edwards. By 1964 the hospital complex also included a maternity hospital, a thoracic block, isolation and psychiatric annexes, a dental clinic, an Institute of Tropical Medicine (established in 1910 and the first medical research organisation in Australia) and a Commonwealth Serum Laboratory.</p><br>
<p>Other hospital works designed by Donoghue and Fulton include general hospitals at Kingaroy (1936-38), Ayr (1941) and Roma, the Nurses&#39; Quarters at Nambour Hospital (1937-38) and maternity hospitals at Goondiwindi, Rockhampton, Warwick and Nambour. Later works include the Barcaldine General Hospital by Fulton and Collins built in 1957 and the Thoracic Block at the Toowoomba Hospital by Donoghue, Cusick and Edwards in 1958.</p><br>
<p>The Second Townsville General Hospital demonstrates the emergence of the Australia-wide trend for a progressive image, inspired by European modernist architecture, for highrise hospital design. The high rise plan, in which various functions could be concentrated in vertically stacked spaces, replaced the earlier pavilion planning principles, in which detached buildings containing single wards were widely separated. Developments in medical theory meant that ventilation and isolation were no longer considered as important to the health of the patient. New priorities based on more efficient use of space, staff, circulation between different parts of the hospital and reduced heating costs led to the popularity of the much more compact highrise type of hospital. Block 3 at the Brisbane General Hospital, designed in 1930, was the first hospital building in Queensland to fully incorporate the principles of the highrise plan. It was designed in the Spanish Mission style to coordinate with the earlier Blocks 1 and 2. The design for the Second Townsville General Hospital was probably the first in Queensland to combine highrise planning principles with a progressive modern image.</p><br>
<p>First introduced into Australia in the 1930s the highrise plan soon dominated new hospital construction. Melbourne architects Stephensen and Meldrum, later Stephensen and Turner, and Leighton Irwin were noted specialists in this increasingly complex field of architectural design. The development of modernist architecture in Australia is often associated with hospitals designed by these firms in the 1930s and 1940s.</p><br>
<p>Charles Fulton is recognised as a key practitioner to have designed in the modern style in Queensland before the Second World War. Fulton was born in Sydney in 1906 and undertook his architectural training there. He worked in London for B George, Architects in 1931 and 1932. In 1933 he was employed by Hall and Cook in Brisbane and he established his practice with Donoghue in 1937. Fulton received acknowledgment for his skilled execution of this style for the Masel residence at Stanthorpe through a meritorious architecture award in the first Queensland awards programme in 1938 and again in 1940 for his own residence at Indooroopilly. In 1937 Fulton was appointed Lecturer in Charge of Architecture at the Central Technical College.</p><br>
<p>Eventually the Second Townsville General Hospital could not expand any further due to its urban location and was regularly reaching absolute capacity. The third and current Townsville Hospital at Douglas began construction in 1998 and opened in 2001, co-located with James Cook University. However the heritage-listed buildings of the second hospital, with their landmark white Art Deco appearance, enviable location, and water views, have been retained and were turned into exclusive apartments.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Second Townsville General Hospital is a six-storied concrete and brick building with a flat roof concealed behind parapet walls. It is situated near the northern corner of the hospital reserve and overlooks Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island. The external walls, which are rendered and painted white, sit on a base of exposed brickwork. The building has a narrow plan with the long north eastern elevation forming the dominant front facade.</p><br>
<p>This symmetrical facade is divided into five distinct bays where the building steps back from the centre to the edges. The central bay is a tower-like structure which provides the main entrance on the ground level. The entrance is further emphasised through the use of exposed brickwork and a cantilevered awning. Steel framed windows form a vertical strip in the centre of the entrance tower above the awning.</p><br>
<p>On the flanking bays each level is expressed through projecting balconies which run along the north eastern elevation. The balconies have light weight metal balustrades. At the edge of the balconies, underneath the balustrades, are deep horizontal bands or valances which provide sunshading for the windows below.</p><br>
<p>Built in a modernist style the surfaces of the building are undecorated. The composition of the building contrasts horizontal with vertical elements, and sheer surfaces with carefully controlled openings and deep shadowed recesses. The vertically proportioned elements are the central entrance tower and stepped corners. The wards, with long open balconies curved and cantilevered at the ends, form the horizontals.</p><br>

<p>The Second Townsville General Hospital was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 26 April 1996 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland&apos;s history.</p><br>
<p>The hospital is one of the most prominent examples of the extensive hospital building program undertaken by Labour Governments in the 1930s and 1940s throughout Queensland as part of its commitment to government sponsored public health.</p><br>

<p>The Second Townsville General Hospital is significant as an institutional building designed by the important architectural firm Donoghue and Fulton which combined the latest ideas in hospital planning with recent developments in architectural design. Charles Fulton, who designed the building, was a key practitioner and teacher of the modern trends in architectural design in Queensland. Fulton was acknowledged for his work in this style. Both the Masel residence at Stanthorpe (1938) and his own residence in Indooroopilly (1940), received a meritorious architecture award in the early Queensland Awards Programmes.</p><br>
<p>The Frisco Charcoal Kilns are remnants of silver mining in the Utah ghost town of Frisco. They remain as a visual documentation of the state&#39;s mining history</p><br>
<h2>Background</h2><br>
<p>San Francisco Mining District was created on August 12, 1871, in the Utah Territory San Francisco mountain range in Beaver County. At that time, galena was the primary ore being mined in the area. The Horn Silver Mine was established in 1875, and was the beginning of the silver mining in the range. The town of Frisco grew up around that mine, and was the nexus of the mining district. On February 12, 1885, the Horn Silver Mine had a massive cave-in. While there were no fatalities and the mine continued to produce for years, workers began to leave for other mining areas.</p><br>
<h2>Kilns</h2><br>
<p>Smelting is the process of extracting metal from ore. Charcoal-fueled smelting in both pits and kilns had been used in Utah since at least 1872. Overall, there were 36 beehive-shaped smelting kilns operating in the district. The five granite beehive-shaped charcoal smelting kilns that have survived in Frisco were created by the Frisco Mining and Smelting Company under the supervision of Benjamin Y. Hampton, primarily for the Horn Silver Mine, between 1877 and 1880 for $500-$1000 apiece. Each kiln varies in size from the other, anywhere from 16 to 32 feet in diameter. The company was hard-hit by the Horn Silver Mine cave-in, and eventually closed up shop in 1884. The surviving kilns were added to the National Register of Historic Places March 9, 1982 as an integral part of Utah&#39;s history.</p><br>

<p>The Downtown Cheyenne Historic District in Cheyenne, Wyoming is a historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Its boundaries have been increased three times.</p><br>

<p>Carnllundain or Carn Llundain is the highest hill of Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire, Wales.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The 136 m high hill stands near the west coast of Ramsey island. The top of the hill is marked by a large cairn and a trig point. On clear days it offers a view of a long stretch of Pembrokeshire coastline, Skomer Island and, across the Irish Sea, of SW Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The area around the hill is of archaeological interest and hosts some Bronze Age stone wall remains.</p><br>
<p>Carn Llundain along with Carn Ysgubor, located near the northern shore of Ramsey Island, during middle ages offered a useful landmark to seafaring pilgrims heading to St Davids.</p><br>
<h2>Access to the summit</h2><br>
<p>The summit of the hill can be reached with a short waymarked diversion from the trail round the island; no special hiking ability is required, but wearing proper outdoor clothing is advisable.</p><br>

<p>The Winchester Soldiers Monument is a historic war memorial located in a park-like setting at the end of Crown Street in the Winsted area of Winchester, Connecticut. Built in 1889–90, it commemorates the communitys participants in the American Civil War. It is one of Connecticut&#39;s most architecturally elaborate memorials to that conflict. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Winchester Soldiers&#39; Monument is located in a residential area north of the commercial Main Street area of Winsted, at the southern end of Crown Street. The park in which it is set is atop a circular hill, which is grassed down to the park drive, paths and a few trees dotting its interior. A low stone retaining wall lines the parking area on Crown Street. A square entrance arch with crenellated top provides access to one of the paths leading to the main monument. The main structure is a three-level tower built of ashlar granite from a local quarry, and is square in footprint. Its walls slope inward in the lower stage to eventually straighten and are crowned by crenellations. At one corner a circular tourelle projects from the third level, topped by a bronze figure of a soldier holding colors. There is a single entrance on one face, with single windows on each of the other first-floor facades, and two windows on each of the upper levels. The total height of the tower is 44 ft.</p><br>
<p>The memorial was completed in 1890 to a design by Robert Hill of Waterbury; the bronze figure was designed by George Bissell. The interior was originally to have an iron staircase installed, but this never occurred due a disagreement with the contractor, and a wooden staircase (intended to be temporary) was installed instead. Funds for the memorial&#39;s construction were raised by the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1977–78, a water fountain was installed near the tower, designed by Andrew Coppola, a sculptor from Hartford.</p><br>
<p>The Tirlyan  is a river in Russia, that flows in Beloretsk district of Bashkortostan. The mouth of the river is located in 1,363 km along the right bank of the Belaya River. The length of the river is 46 km, the catchment area is 529 km ².</p><br>
<h2>Geography and hydrology</h2><br>
<p>The river takes its source in the Zhuravlin Marsh located under the Yalangas ridge (1297.9 m), between the Ustinskaya mountains (Устинская) (865.9 m) and the Tikhaja (Тихая) (774.4 m).</p><br>
<p>According to the state water register of Russia the river belongs to the Kamsky basin district, the water sector of the river is attached to the Belaya district from the source to the Arsky Rock gauging station, and the river sub-basin of the Belaya River.</p><br>
<h2>Tyrlyansk Reservoir</h2><br>
<p>On the river there is the Tyrlyansk Reservoir, best known for its flooding on August 7, 1994, which led to devastating consequences.</p><br>
<p>The Tyrlyansk Reservoir is located at 54&deg;13&prime;40&Prime;N latitude, 58&deg;35&prime;00&Prime;E longitude and was formed on the Tirlyan River as a result of the construction of a dam for the needs of recreation, fish farming, flood mitigation, and power generation. The area of the lake is 129.3 ha. The height above sea level is 195 m.</p><br>
<p>Despite the modest catchment areas of the river, this reservoir is known for its disastrous breakthrough on August 7, 1994. This abnormal discharge of 8,600,000 m³ of water is still considered one of the most damaging consequences of the Russian Federation. In a heavy rain, which lasted from 5 to 8 August, the dam was flooded and washed away. As a result of this accident, 4 settlements (Tyrjanski, Shushpa, Kataika and Belorezk) were flooded, 85 houses were completely destroyed, 200 houses damaged, 29 people were killed, 786 people were left homeless. The break occurred because locks did not work and therefore could not be opened.</p><br>
<p>The Winsted Hosiery Mill, also known as the Whiting Mill, is an industrial complex at 210 Holabird Avenue in the Winsted section of Winchester, Connecticut. Developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of the largest industrial employers in the community for many years, and is relatively unaltered from its period of development. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It is now subdivided for multiple industrial and commercial tenants.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former Winsted Hosiery Mill complex is located north of Winsted&#39;s commercial downtown, on the east side of the Still River and the south side of Holabird Avenue. The complex has six buildings, and is roughly divided in half by Whiting Street, which parallels the river. Five of them are of brick construction, and one is of stone. The stone building, which housed the mill offices, is located at the corner of Holabird and Whiting, with a long and narrow brick building extending to the south. Across Whiting Street is another large building, with smaller structures attached and standing detached nearby.</p><br>
<p>The Winsted Hosiery Company was founded in 1882 by William L. Gilbert, producing hosiery and underwear for men made from cotton-wool blends. Its original mill building burned down in 1900, after which the company embarked on a ten-year construction program that resulted in the present complex. The company experienced significant growth until about 1935, and saw declining employment during World War II. In the 1950s it shifted to the production of woolen garments. In 1965 the company, then known as the Winchester Spinning Company, moved its operations to more modern facilities in North Carolina.</p><br>
<p>Scargo Lake is a fresh water kettle pond in Dennis, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.</p><br>
<h2>Legends about its formation</h2><br>
<p>There are many Native American Legends about the formation of Scargo Lake, and all are some variant of a tale of Princess Scargo. One story is that a man from another tribe brought the princess four fish, and he promised to return before the fish returned. The princess was said to have had a small pond dug to keep the fish in, but woke one morning to find that the pond had dried up, and all but one fish had died. Her tears kept the last fish alive until her father dug a lake for it. The boundary of this lake was determined by where four arrows of a tribesman landed. Once the lake was complete, the fish survived, and the man from the other tribe fulfilled his promise to return to the princess.</p><br>
<p>More commonly heard is the story of a princess who was given three fish in a pumpkin by a young brave going off to war. He was gone so long that the fish began to outgrow the pumpkin. She then had the women of the village dig out the pond with clam shells so the fish could survive. The dirt the women dug out became Scargo Hill. Today it is the highest hill in the mid-Cape area.</p><br>
<p>Another legend is very similar, but her dug a hole in the ground (considered by many to be fish shaped). The dirt from the hole was said to become the 160 foot Scargo Hill, and that the hole filled up with water from the heavy autumn rains, which also drowned the princess. She was seen as a sacrifice, and the reason the lake is well stocked with fish. Another says that an Indian named Maushop dug out the pond, and then lit his pipe. The smoke from the pipe attracted dark clouds from which rain fell and filled the pond.</p><br>
<h2>Beaches</h2><br>
<p>There are two public beaches on Scargo Lake. One is Princess Beach, which is sandy. The other is Scargo Beach which has sand dumped in the water, but no sandy area by the water.</p><br>
<h2>Fishing</h2><br>
<p>Scargo Lake is stocked with brook, brown, and rainbow trout, all of which are allowed to be fished.</p><br>
<p>Mount Misery is the dominant feature overlooking Huonville in southern Tasmania. With an elevation of 690 m, it is typical of most of the peaks surrounding Huonville; but its location on a bend of the Huon River makes it the dominant feature in many tourist photos.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The mountain divides the localities of Lucaston to the north east, Ranelagh to the south and Judbury to the west. The Russell Ridge Conservation Area to the north links Mount Misery Habitat Reserve to Mount Wellington Park. The mountain is entirely within the Huon Valley watershed.</p><br>

<h3>Informal community habitat reserve</h3><br>
<p>Many of the land owners on the slopes of Mount Misery and surrounding areas share common nature conservation values. these people own 68 individual titles and loosely apply the name "Mount Misery Habitat Reserve" to the protected area. About half of the titles are formally protected by conservation covenants that protect the natural values in perpetuity. These covenants include the first two conservation covenants issued in Tasmania. These covenants are created under the Private Forest Reserves Program operated by the Tasmanian government. Conservation covenants establish an agreement that sees important conservation values protected for biodiversity in perpetuity.</p><br>
<h3>Land usage</h3><br>
<p>Most of the land is used for nature-focused residences. Some is used solely for conservation, a few are used as weekend getaways and one group of five titles is an ecotourism resort.</p><br>
<h2>Vegetation</h2><br>
<p>The southern slopes are predominantly tall wet eucalyptus forest with small pockets of rainforest, growing in shallow peaty soils. The northern slopes are dry Eucalyptus tenuiramis on shallow mudstone soils. Most of the land is open grassland.</p><br>
<p>In general, the canopy is 20 - high. Some trees are 50 - meters tall.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The car park and track head are at Huon Bush Retreats, Browns Road, Ranelagh.</p><br>
<p>Centennial Hall is a historic community hall and schoolhouse at 105 Post Road in North Hampton, New Hampshire. Built in 1876, it is a distinctive local example of Stick Style architecture, and has served the town as a schoolhouse and community meeting place for most of its existence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Centennial Hall stands on the northeast side of the triangular town green of North Hampton, formed in part by the junction of Post Road (New Hampshire Route 151) and New Hampshire Route 111. It is set facing west, just west of the south-facing Congregational church. It is a two-story wood frame structure, with a truncated hip roof and clapboarded exterior. It has a three-bay facade, with the center bay projecting slightly and rising to an open belfry and pyramidal cap. The roof eaves are adorned with decorative brackets, and the front of the upper portion of the tower has applied wood work in the Stick Style. Windows on the ground floor are set under jigsawn bracketed gables, and their lintels also have small brackets. The main entrance is sheltered by a hip roof portico that is fronted by a Stick style gable.</p><br>
<p>The hall was built in 1875-76, with funds donated by John W. F. Hobbs, a native son who made his fortune in Boston. The building was intended to provide new school facilities for two of the town&#39;s school districts, which then had old and overcrowded facilities. Land for the building was donated by the adjacent church. The school facilities were located on the ground floor, with a meeting hall on the second floor. A dining area was later added to the attic level. The building housed elementary and junior high students until 1949. From the 1950s to the 1980s the building was used for light industrial purposes, which brought conflict after the building was zoned into residential area. In 1998 the building was acquired by a local nonprofit organized for its preservation.</p><br>
<p>Khotiv hillfort is a hillfort of early Iron Age  in the village of Khotiv, Ukraine.</p><br>
<p>The hillfort adjoins the southern part of Kiev, namely Feofaniya Park. It occupies a rhombic plateau 1000x700 m wide, bordered by valleys of the streams. All the plateau area, 31 ha, was surrounded with earth rampart, while the slope of the hill was fortified by a scarp with a berm and a moat beneath. The rampart, scarp and berm are well preserved on the western and eastern edges, and remains of the moat are much less conspicuous now. It is supposed that the hillfort had 3 entrances: in the northern, eastern and southern part of the rampart.</p><br>
<p>Khotiv hillfort has the status of an archaeological monument since 1965. In 2007, official borders of the monument were cut down, and in 2009, the excluded areas became the place of house building. The northern part of the hillfort was demolished by building of a palace of Ukrainian billionaire Yuri Kosiuk. Later, the works began in the southern and eastern parts of the hillfort, which are planned for building too.</p><br>
<h2>Exploration</h2><br>
<p>The first scientific mention of the hillfort was made in 1848 by Ivan Fundukley, governor of Kiev and notable historian. He mentions a local legend about some town which existed there. In 1864, the hillfort was briefly described by another student of local history, Lavrentiy Pohilevich. He reports this legend in more details: in ancient times there was a town with a castle of a prince named Siriak. The locality around the hillfort is still named Siriakove, and the first recording of this name dates from 1465.</p><br>
<p>In 1873, Volodymyr Antonovych made more detailed description and drawing of the hillfort. He interpreted it as Zvenigorod, the fortress of Kievan Rus&#39; known from chronicles. But archaeological data of 20th century refuted this idea.</p><br>
<p>In 1917, a bronze Corinthian coin of 5 century BC was found on the hillfort during a botanical excursion. In 1918, fragments of Scythian pottery and some Slavic things dated from 8-10 centuries AD were found there.</p><br>
<p>The first archaeological exploration of the hillfort was conducted in 1948 by the team from Institute of Archaeology in Kiev headed by Ye. F. Pokrovska. They excavated 156 m in the northern projection of the hillfort. Next expedition, headed by Ye. O. Pokrovska from the same Institute, worked in 1965-1967 and unearthed 508 m in the vicinity.</p><br>
<p>In 2004, northern and western parts of the hillfort (6.75 ha) were explored with micromagnetic measurements. It revealed location of several ancient buildings, some of which were unearthed. Some additional measurements were made in 2009.</p><br>
<p>In 2016, new excavations were made on the western side of the hillfort, on the rampart.</p><br>
<h2>Finds</h2><br>
<p>Like other hillforts of Scythian times, Khotiv hillfort had buildings only near the inner side of the rampart. The central area was empty and could be used for farming or for keeping of cattle, maybe during wars. Discovered structures include dugouts and surface buildings with walls made of wood covered by clay. Fallen walls of several such buildings were excavated, some of them exceed 20 m in length.</p><br>
<p>The pottery from the hillfort include local and Greek one. The latter was identified as originating from Chios, Lesbos, Klazomenai and Samos. Other ceramic finds from the hillfort include spindle whorls of various forms, a sinker, and small balls and "loafs" which can be votive offerings.</p><br>
<p>A broken stone dish and fragment of a stone axe or hammer, sling stones, sharpening stone with a hole, bone handle of an unknown tool, beads made of lead and yellow glass, as well as other things were also unearthed.</p><br>
<p>Bronze finds include a snake-like ring, pins, including nail-like ones, and arrowheads of various forms. Iron objects include knives, awls, pin and some arrowheads.</p><br>
<p>Another notable find is a bone plate with carving of a panther or a leopard in the Scythian animal style. Size of the plate is 4.7x1.8 cm. It could be a part of a bigger thing, e.g. a spoon or a mirror handle. Associated ceramics and arrowheads indicate that it belongs to the end of 6th century BC. Such carvings are rare on Scythian bone things, although more common on metallic ones.</p><br>
<p>Plenty of animal bones imply that dwellers of the hillfort bred domestic animals, predominantly horses. Pigs, cows, sheep, goats and dogs were also held. Dominance of horses differs Khotiv hillfort from other hillforts of forest steppe, which were dominated by cattle or pigs. Its inhabitants hunted wild boars, deers, elks, bears and beavers, sometimes aurochs and hares. Sporadic bones of turtles, foxes, geese, ducks, crows and men were found.</p><br>
<p>Finds from the hillfort date from Scythian times, approximately 6, or, according to other researchers, 6 to 5 century BC.</p><br>
<p>Founders of the hillfort were nonmigratory. They practised agriculture and animal breeding, especially horse breeding. Hunting played a big role. Trade with Ancient Greek colonies was less intensive than on other hillforts of forest steppe. It is explained by larger distance.</p><br>
<h2>History after Scythians</h2><br>
<p>Written sources allow to trace history of the hillfort since 1465, when the last Grand Prince of Kiev Semen Olelkovich granted it to prince Yuri Borisovich. After him, the hillfort consecutively belonged to several other people. In 1588, prince Matviy Voronetsky transferred it to the possession of Kiev Pechersk Lavra, where it remained for almost 200 years. In 1786, during secularization reform of Catherine the Great, the hillfort passed to the use of Khotiv inhabitants. From this time, it was covered by fields and gardens.</p><br>
<p>Agricultural works, which lasted on the hillfort over 200 years, did not ruin the fortifications, but damaged the archaeological horizon. In 1939, southwestern edge of the hillfort was damaged by a big landslide, and in the late 1960s, by building of a dam on the nearby Vita stream. The southern edge of the hillfort, already damaged by erosion, became fringed by more and more village houses.</p><br>
<h2>Protection and building</h2><br>
<p>Khotiv hillfort has the status of an archaeological monument since 1965, given by resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. In 2009, this status was confirmed by a new governmental resolution.</p><br>
<p>Boundaries of the Archaeological reserve "Khotiv hillfort in the borders of fortification of Scythian times" were specified by Kyiv City Council in 1979 and confirmed by Kiev City State Administration in 2002. These boundaries embraced the plateau with the fortification and adjacent slopes with total area of 48 ha.</p><br>
<p>In 2007, Institute of monument protection research of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine made documentation for the archaeological monument where its area was restricted to 16.49 ha in central and western parts of the plateau. All the fortifications were excluded from the monument area. Approximately the same borders are stated in the development plan of Khotiv.</p><br>
<p>In 2008, Khotiv village council transferred part of the land excluded from the monument to the possession of 5 building cooperatives for free. They received northeastern part of the hillfort (including all the eastern rampart with the scarp) and adjacent slope with total area 13 ha. After several years of splitting and resale, the land passed into the ownership of businessmen Victor Polishchuk, Liliya Rizva and Yuri Kosiuk. Parts of the hillfort which are in the possession of the former two owners are still intact, while Kosiuk&#39;s land became the site of an active building works.</p><br>
<p>The building on the hillfort began in 2009. Initially its customer was unknown, and an information board on the building site announced construction of a new entrance to Feofaniya Park. Gradually, a luxurious palace surrounded by terraces appeared there. As of 2016, the northern part of the hillfort (one of the richest in remains of ancient buildings and enclosed with the highest rampart), including its fortification, and the landscape of adjacent areas was demolished. According to Yuri Kosiuk, "the building which is built is built in a chasm, and it has nothing to do with the hillfort".</p><br>
<p>Changes occurred in the other parts of the hillfort as well. As of 2015, all the eastern part of the plateau was marked as a land intended for building in the Public cadastre map of Ukraine. Many new privatized and leased land parcels appeared in the western and southeastern parts.</p><br>
<p>In 2010-2012, a road stretched over all the southern part of the plateau. In the development plan of Khotiv, southern side of this road (named Parkova Street) is also intended for building. Several big erosion zones in the southern part and a small ravine in the eastern end of the hillfort were buried with soil. This ravine, according to Ye. F. Pokrovska, head of the first archaeological exploration of the hillfort, could be an ancient entrance.</p><br>
<p>In 2013, Institute of monument protection research of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine made a new documentation of Khotiv hillfort, approved by the Ministry same year. This documentation describes an archaeological reserve (with the same area as the archaeological monument on the 2007 scheme), an archaeological monument (approximately twice bigger, including all the plateau) and its protection zone (100–500 m wide). The palace was marked as a "dissonant building".</p><br>
<p>In 2016, Institute of Archaeology of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences prepared one more documentation of the hillfort, where protected area includes almost 20 ha. It comprises the 16.5 ha from 2007 scheme plus the western border of the plateau with the rampart and scarp. Additionally, part of a buried erosion zone is included. In the same year, new borders were approved by Khotiv village council and marked by red concrete pillars. Three stones with commemorative plaques and an information board were installed on the hillfort as well. Area of the archaeological monument stated on the board is 18.3 ha, and area of its protection zone (a strip along its western edge) is 1.04 ha. It excludes all the northern, southern and eastern parts of the hillfort (the latter still having a well-preserved rampart and scarp). The rest of the hillfort is planned for museumification.</p><br>
<p>The Woodbury Historic District No. 2 encompasses a linear rural-residential area of southern Woodbury, Connecticut. It extends along the towns Main Street , from the town line with Southbury in the south to the South Pomperaug Avenue junction in the north. It contains some of the towns finest examples of 18th and early 19th-century residential architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The town of Woodbury was settled by colonists in 1673, having purchased its land from the Potatuck people. The early settlement was made along a long-standing Native American trail, now roughly followed by Main Street. It was incorporated in 1674, and was the mother town for several surrounding communities, achieving its present municipal bounds by 1807. It was a prosperous agricultural community in the 18th and early 19th century.</p><br>
<p>The historic district is organized as a basically linear area of about 50 acre, stretching from the town line in the south for about 1 mi, almost to the junction with South Pomperaug Avenue. This area is largely rural-residential in character, which continues into the It abuts the Southbury Historic District No. 1 to the south, and (after passing through a more modern commercial area) into the Woodbury Historic District No. 1. There are 27 houses of historic significance in the district, ranging in construction date from the late 18th to the 20th century. There is only one house that predates 1740; there are six houses from the Federal and Greek Revival periods, including a particularly fine Greek Revival house on the east side of Main Street, featuring a flushboarded gable pediment, corner pilasters, and a Greek Revival entrance surround. Most of the houses in the district post-date the American Civil War.</p><br>
<p>The East Mitchell Street Historic District is a residential historic district located in Petoskey, Michigan. It is roughly bounded by Rose, Kalamazoo, State, Howard, Michigan, and Division streets. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The East Mitchell Street Historic District occupies 31 blocks, and contains 294 residential properties, of which 278 are historically contributing to the district. The houses are predominantly frame structures, to stories high. Architectural styles include Victorian, Queen Anne, Shingle style, Colonial Revival, Radford-type, Bungalow, and other period designs, dating from the late 1800s through the 1930s. The district also contains four churches, a parochial school, and a public school.</p><br>
<p>The central portion of the neighborhood runs along East Mitchell Street, where the residences tend to be larger and more elaborately detailed. East Mitchell runs westward and downhill into the central downtown area of Petoskey, and the East Mitchell Street Historic District lies on parallel streets both north and south of East Mitchell. Landscaping in the district includes a profusion of shade trees and shallow front lawns, sometimes banked behind low retaining walls. Despite physical alterations of many houses (in particular enclosing porches), the overall historic appearance of the district remains intact due to retention of important design elements, and collections of structures with high historic integrity.</p><br>
<p>The institutional structures in the neighborhood include:</p><br>
<p>Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1020 Mitchell) - The church was constructed in 1958, and exhibits a post-World War II version of Gothic Revival architecture. The nearby parish house and parsonage was constructed in 1938.</p><br>
<p>First Presbyterian Church (461 Mitchell) - This church was constructed in 1899 as a Gothic Revival/Queen Anne structure, and was remodeled in 1952 in a Colonial Revival design.</p><br>
<p>Temple Bnai Israel (501 Michigan) - Originally constructed by the Parr Baptist congregation in 1881 and moved to this site in 1910, the Temple Bnai Israel is a Victorian Gothic Revival structure.</p><br>
<p>Parr Memorial Baptist Church (502 Michigan) - This church was constructed in 1910, and exhibits an early 20th century version of Gothic Revival architecture.</p><br>
<p>St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and School (500 block of Howard) - The St. Francis Xavier parish first occupied the site of the current complex in 1879. The church complex contains four buildings: a large brick Gothic Revival church erected in 1903-08, a two-story Gothic Revival monastery erected in 1903, a two-story Spanish Mission Style school from 1927 (with a modern rear addition), and a two-story brick rectory.</p><br>
<p>Old Petoskey Senior High and Central Elementary School (600 block of Howard) - The old high school building is a two-story brick structure of Classical Revival design, erected in 1913. The Central School addition to the school is an Art Deco building constructed in 1929.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The East Mitchell Street Historic District grew as Petoskey grew, and has served as a neighborhood where a cross section of Petoskey citizens lived, ranging from prominent businessmen to laborers. Many of the houses appear to be constructed from ready-to-use architectural designs. What is likely the oldest structure in the neighborhood, at 519 Kalamazoo Street, dates from 1877. Earlier structures were predominantly Victorian and Queen Anne designs, but at the turn of the century more Colonial Revival houses were constructed. Bungalow houses were also popular in the neighborhood, and a few Prairie and International designs were also executed further into the 20th century.</p><br>
<p>The Grand Hogback is a 70-mile long, curving, spine-like ridge in Western Colorado that extends from near McClure Pass in Pitkin County through Garfield County and then to near Meeker in Rio Blanco County. The hogback is significant because it marks part of the boundary between the Colorado Plateau to the west and the Southern Rocky Mountains to the east.</p><br>
<p>The elevation of the ridge ranges from 7,710 ft to 9,194 ft. The hogback appears as a series of serrated ridges and is easily discernable from Google Maps and other aerial views. It is visible from Interstate 70.</p><br>
<h2>Gaps</h2><br>
<p>Rivers have carved out several gaps in the hogback, the most notable being the one the Colorado River has carved out near New Castle, Colorado. Others include Harvey Gap and Rifle Gap, both of which have been dammed to create reservoirs and state parks.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>A monocline, the Grand Hogback is part of the Mesaverde Formation. The ridge formed towards the end of the Laramide orogeny during the middle to late Eocene.</p><br>
<p>The Anglican Church of St George in Easton in Gordano in the English county of Somerset is a Grade II* listed building.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The church is dedicated to St. George.</p><br>
<p>The date of the first Church on this site is unknown, but records exist dating back to 1239. It is known that a church stood on the current site since 1230, but was rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. The registers date from 1559.</p><br>
<p>The church was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1872 by Ewan Christian. Conservation work was carried out on the tower in 2011. In 2015 a grant was received to help towards the cost of the repair of the church roof.</p><br>
<p>The parish is part of the benefice of Pill, Portbury and Easton in Gordano within the Diocese of Bath and Wells.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The church has north and south aisles, a nave with clerestory, vestry and chancel. The 14th century three-stage west tower is supported by set-back buttresses.</p><br>
<p>The Bøvra, also known as the Bævra, is a river in the municipalities of Surnadal and Rindal in Møre og Romsdal county and in the municipality of Hemne in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. It runs through the Bøver Valley and empties into Hamnesfjord at Bøverfjorden, where the high-water mark lies 650 m upstream from the mouth of the river. Its drainage basin covers 243 km&sup2; and receives about 1,500 mm of precipitation annually.</p><br>
<p>The main river has a natural salmon population up to 20 km from the fjord, and salmon can also be found 1 km into the Svorka River, a tributary. After regulation of the river, salmon fishing has been limited to downstream from the Svorka power station. In 1986 salmon flukes, a parasite, were detected and the river was treated with rotenone in 1986 and 1989. After the treatment, the river was reopened for fishing in 1994. In addition to salmon, sea trout also travel up the river.</p><br>
<p>The lower part of the Bøvra Valley is a U-shaped valley and the course of the river creates meanders. Upstream, from the Bjørnåssetra farm to the Brattset farm, the river runs through a relatively narrow canyon for a length of about 5 km.</p><br>
<p>The watercourse was regulated in 1963 and it has several power stations along it, including the Svorka Power Station. Due to the regulation, water flow was reduced in two tributaries, the Svorka and Litlbævra (or Lille-Bøvra). Around 43% of the river&#39;s catchment area is used for the Svorka Power Station. Below the Svorka Power Station and 3.7 km from the fjord the total water flow is the same as before the regulation, but varies with the operation of the power plant and the water flow becomes very small when the power plant stops completely. The Nordsvorka Power Station came into operation in 2007. The water flow in the upper part of the river between the mouth of the Litlbævra and the Svorka Power Station has also been greatly reduced as a result of regulation.</p><br>
<p>According to Amund Helland, the fjord was formerly called Bifrafjǫrðr after the river, which was formerly called Bifr.</p><br>
